StarFive VisionFive 2, Part 2

Post by rhyde »

Well, it took a bit of work, but I finally got the StarFive VisionFive 2 board running the latest OS. This big problem is that it required a firmware update in order to boot the latest software and most of the instructions I found on the Internet required the latest software in order to do the firmware upgrade, or required a much more qualified system administrator than I to pull it off.

Fortunately, I found this discussion:
https://forum.rvspace.org/t/visionfive- ... tions/1238
that explained how to get the firmware upgraded using nothing more than a serial port (YModem download). That was something I could handle. In any case, I have the latest and greatest up and running now.

Boy is the GUI slow! Moving the mouse across a pull-down menu involves a lot of lag (selected menu entries get highlighted long after the mouse moved over them). That's okay, I probably do most of my work logged in over SSH or a serial terminal anyway. Once again, this device is not ready for prime time (at least to the unwashed masses). I'm suffering though this because I'd like to explore the possibility of writing "The Art of RISC-V Assembly Language." We'll see how it goes (of course, I've got to learn RISC-V assembly first :) ).
Cheers,

BTW, I created a case for the StarFive VisionFive 2 board using Fusion 360 and a 3D printer. I've attached the .STL file if anyone else wants one of these.
